Taking It One Step at a Time
Introducing a collar to a kitten might seem simple, but getting it right from the start makes all the difference. A kitten that's comfortable wearing a collar early in life will be much easier to keep safe as they grow. Here's how to make the process as smooth and stress-free as possible - for both of you.
When to Start
The best time to introduce a collar is between 8 and 12 weeks of age, once your kitten has settled into their new home. Give them a week or two to adjust to their surroundings before adding anything new to their routine.
Choose the Right Collar
Before you even put the collar on, make sure you've chosen the right one:
- Breakaway safety buckle - essential for kittens, who are especially prone to getting caught on things as they explore. A breakaway buckle releases under pressure, preventing injury.
- Lightweight and soft - velvet or soft fabric collars are ideal. Avoid anything heavy or stiff that might irritate sensitive kitten skin.
- Correct size - kitten collars should be snug but not tight. The two-finger rule applies: you should be able to slide two fingers comfortably between the collar and your kitten's neck.
Step-by-Step Introduction
- Let them sniff it first. Place the collar near your kitten's bed or favourite spot for a day or two so they can get used to the smell.
- Put it on during playtime. Distract your kitten with a toy or treat while you fasten the collar. This creates a positive association from the start.
- Keep the first session short. Leave the collar on for 10–15 minutes the first time, then remove it and reward your kitten with a treat or cuddle.
- Gradually increase wear time. Over the course of a week, extend the time your kitten wears the collar until they're comfortable wearing it all day.
- Monitor closely. Check regularly that the fit is still correct - kittens grow fast! Adjust or replace the collar as needed.
What to Expect
It's completely normal for a kitten to scratch at the collar or act a little unsettled at first. Most kittens adjust within a few days. If your kitten seems distressed or is constantly trying to remove the collar, take a break and try again the next day.
Never leave a collar on an unsupervised kitten until you're confident they're fully comfortable with it.
