How to Measure a Cat Collar

Getting the right collar size for your cat is important for both comfort and safety. A collar that is too tight can be uncomfortable, while one that is too loose may slip off or get caught.

This simple guide will help you measure your cat correctly before choosing a handmade collar.

What You Will Need

  • A soft measuring tape
    OR
  • A piece of string and a ruler

Step 1: Measure Around Your Cat’s Neck

Wrap the measuring tape gently around the base of your cat’s neck where the collar would naturally sit.

The tape should feel snug but not tight.

Step 2: Leave Room for Comfort

You should be able to fit two fingers comfortably between the tape and your cat’s neck.

This ensures:

  • the collar is comfortable
  • your cat can move freely
  • the collar is not dangerously tight

A properly fitted breakaway collar should sit securely while still allowing easy movement.

Step 3: Record the Measurement

Write down the measurement in:

  • inches
    OR
  • centimetres

If your cat is fluffy, gently press through the fur to get the most accurate neck size.

Kitten Collar Sizing

Kittens grow quickly, so it is important to:

  • check the fit regularly
  • loosen the collar as they grow
  • never leave a tight collar on a growing kitten

For very young kittens, supervised wear is recommended at first while they get used to their collar.

Signs a Collar Fits Correctly

A well-fitted collar should:

  • allow two fingers underneath
  • not rub or flatten fur excessively
  • stay in place without slipping over the head
  • sit comfortably around the neck

Why Breakaway Collars Matter

Cats are naturally curious climbers and explorers. A breakaway safety collar is designed to release if the collar becomes caught, helping to reduce the risk of injury.

This is especially important for:

  • outdoor cats
  • adventurous indoor cats
  • kittens learning to wear collars

Final Tips

  • Always check your cat’s collar regularly for fit and wear
  • Remove damaged collars immediately
  • Introduce collars gradually with treats and praise
  • Supervise nervous cats during first wear

All our collars are handmade to order. If a generic cat or kitten size doesn't suit simply add a note at checkout with your cat's neck size and your collar will be custom-made to fit at no extra cost.

A properly fitted handmade collar should be both safe and comfortable - while letting your cat show off a little personality too.
